| I list here the distilleries which welcome visitors and have reception centres with guides and who offer a dram.
All are within 40 minutes of the cabins. Other distilleries are sometimes happy to show visitors around, but only by prior arrangement.
Apart from Glenfiddich, which is open all year, opening times vary and are usually seasonal. Phone Elgin Tourist Office for further details – 01343 542666.
| Situated in Keith, this distillery, the flagship for Chivas Regal, has a comprehensive tour including a tutored nosing, library, lounge and retail shop. Visitors are encouraged to linger and acquire an in depth knowledge of Scotch. Strathisla is the most expensive distillery to visit, but aficionados will find this one particularly worthwhile. Coffee, shortbread and a dram are included in the price.
| Situated in Dufftown, this distillery is the “spiritual” home of many well known brands such as Balvenie, Grants Standfast and of course Glenfiddich itself. The most popular of all visitor centres, maybe because it’s free! OPEN all year.
| Situated in Rothes, this distillery visit offers something different. After the guided tour, visitors are encouraged to walk up through the wooded gardens to the gorge and imbibe of “the cratur spirit” from the “whisky safe”.
There will be NO charge in 2003.
| Situated on the A95 travelling south out of Aberlour. There is a charge.
| Situated at Knockando a few miles beyond Archiestown on the B9102. The home of Johnny Walker. There is a charge.
| Situated about 5 miles south of Aberlour on the A95. This is the only remaining privately owned family distillery and as such extends a cosy welcome and a particularly fine malt.
| Situated just off the A96 on the Forres By-pass. This recently re-opened distillery, is now owned by Gordon and Macphail of Elgin, whose shop in South Street is a mecca for connoisseurs of malts, and has the most comprehensive selection of whiskies in the world.
| Situated just off the B9009 on the Dufftown – Tomintoul road. A good hours drive, but well worth the effort to visit the home of “The Glenlivet”, regarded as the standard to which all other Speyside Malts aspire, and the oldest legal distillery in Scotland. A very good audio-visual display and shop, as well as a café.
There will be NO charge in 2003.
| Situated just south of Forres and signposted from there. This redundant distillery, now owned by Moray Council, is set up as a showpiece on how whisky was originally produced.
